Hi! My name is Mia, and I’m an intern at U4U. As a young woman, I know firsthand that being a girl isn’t always easy. We’re constantly aware of how we look, how we act, and how we’re perceived. And often, our harshest critic is ourselves. At 22, I’ve been on a journey toward accepting myself fully, embracing both the good and the imperfect. In this article, I want to share some of the tips and mindset shifts that have helped me practice self-love and show up for myself with more kindness.
1. Learning to Talk to Myself Kindly
One of the biggest shifts I had to make was changing the way I spoke to myself. I used to say things in my head that I would never say to a friend. Now, when I catch myself being overly critical, I pause and ask: Would I say this to someone I care about? If the answer is no, it’s time to reframe. Self-love starts with self-respect, and that includes your inner dialogue.
2. Letting Go of Comparison
Comparison is everywhere—on social media, in and outside of school. It’s so easy to look at someone else’s life and feel like you’re falling behind. What I’ve learned is that comparison is the thief of joy. Everyone is on a different timeline, dealing with different struggles that we don’t see online. Muting accounts that made me feel insecure and following ones that inspire or uplift me made a bigger difference than I expected.
3. Embracing Imperfection
For a long time, I felt like I needed to fix my skin or change my body to feel confident or worthy. Breakouts, scars, stretch marks, and insecurities felt like flaws instead of normal parts of being human. The truth is, nobody is perfect and no skin is flawless—no matter what we see online. I’ve learned that growth doesn’t mean waking up every day loving how I look; it means accepting myself even on the days I don’t. Some days I feel confident in my skin, and other days I struggle—and both versions of me deserve grace, patience, and kindness.
4. Learning to Be Comfortable With Who You Are
I spent years trying to fit into versions of myself that felt more “acceptable” to others. Letting go of that pressure has been freeing. I’m learning that I don’t have to shrink myself or change my personality to belong. Being comfortable with who I am—even when I’m still growing—has been one of the most important steps in my self-love journey.
5. Celebrating Small Wins
Self-love isn’t just about big breakthroughs; it’s also about recognizing the small moments. Getting out of bed on a hard day, speaking up for yourself, or simply taking a break when you need one—those things matter. I’ve learned to celebrate progress, no matter how small it seems.
The path to self-love isn’t linear, and it looks different for everyone. I’m still learning, still growing, and still reminding myself that I am enough as I am. If you’re struggling with self-acceptance, know that you’re not alone, and that being kind to yourself is a powerful place to start.
If even one of these tips resonates with you, I hope you take it as a sign to give yourself a little more grace today. You are beautiful inside and out 💗
